GAAP provides education, empowerment and advocacy to our homeless and marginally-housed clients. All of our services are provided free of charge.

Public Benefits

GAAP helps people apply for, receive, and maintain General Assistance (GA), Food Stamps and, when appropriate, Supplemental Security Income (SSI). In addition to connecting clients with the appropriate benefits, GAAP helps clients resolve disputes with social service caseworkers and represents clients whose benefits have been denied or discontinued at administrative hearings.

General Legal Assistance

GAAP also advocates for clients in minor legal disputes. Recent matters handled by GAAP include:

  • Representing a client’s interests in a credit dispute arising out of returned merchandise.
  • Clearing more than 100 outstanding warrants during 2009. By clearing these warrants, most of which are years old and out-of-state, clients can continue to receive public benefits which would otherwise be terminated.
  • Assisting numerous clients with eviction and other landlord-tenant issues.
  • Representing a client who fell victim to an online layaway scam. GAAP successfully obtained the client’s money back.

Other Services

GAAP also provides a welcoming environment in the heart of the Tenderloin for individuals to make free phone calls, use computers, obtain blankets, receive clothing vouchers and fulfill some of their most basic needs.

Get involved by volunteering with GAAP today. GAAP’s volunteer program offers a unique opportunity for students and community members to make a difference.

GAAP relies on the generosity and strength of our volunteers to staff the drop-in clinic and provide the majority of our essential services. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to three hours per week at the clinic, open every day, except Wednesdays, from 9am-12pm, and 1:30pm-4pm.
